Who should take an Iron Supplement?

ANAEMIA SUFFERERS
Iron-deficiency anaemia is characterised by a lack of Iron in the red blood cells which hampers their ability to supply enough oxygen to the rest of the body. Symptoms include fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness and difficulty concentrating. An Iron supplement may assist in preventing iron-deficiency anaemia.

PREGNANT WOMEN
Pregnant women need more Iron to serve their increased blood volume and to provide Iron for the foetus. A lack of Iron can increase the risk of the baby being born underweight. A folic acid-rich Iron supplement may help support both mother and child.

MENSTRUATING WOMEN
Menstruation, particularly if it’s heavier than usual, depletes Iron supply and may result in Iron-Deficiency Anaemia. Taking an Iron supplement may assist in preventing symptoms related to Iron-deficiency.

VEGETARIANS AND VEGANS
The type of Iron that is easiest to absorb is found in animal products, putting vegetarians and vegans at risk of Iron-deficiency. An Iron supplement may assist in ensuring that they receive their daily recommended intake.

ATHLETES
Hard training stimulates an increase in red blood cells that demand more Iron. Taking an Iron supplement may assist with the production of healthy red blood cells which contain enough iron to oxygenate the body.

ADHD SUFFERERS
Children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are much more likely to be Iron deficient. A lack of Iron isn’t the cause of ADHD, but studies suggest it can make symptoms more severe. An Iron supplement may assist in easing ADHD-related symptoms.
